Working from Home vs. Working Remotely: What’s the Difference? Why Does it Matter?

In the wake of the pandemic and the associated remote work revolution, many use “working from home” and “working remotely” interchangeably. However, while they share similarities, they are not quite the same. At Payara, we’ve embraced a remote-first approach that goes beyond the confines of a home office, and we want to share why this distinction matters.

Defining the Terms

Working from Home: This typically means setting up your workspace within the confines of your home. Your office could be a dedicated room, the kitchen table or a cozy corner with a makeshift desk. The focus is on creating a productive environment in your home where you can work effectively.

Working Remotely: This term encompasses a broader scope. Remote work isn’t tied to any specific location. Yes, you can set up a workspace in your home, but it can extend beyond these four walls. You could be working from fancy locations, such as a beach in Bali, a café in Paris or a mountain cabin in Colorado. But it also gives you the flexibility to work next to a loved one in a care home or in a specialized healthcare facility, so you can be employed even in challenging situations, where working from an office or a home may not be suitable. Even more, working remotely gives the possibility to change your desk during the day, supporting parents that may need to pick up their kids from school and/or clubs. Ultimately, remote work allows you to take your office with you, wherever you go. It’s about having the flexibility to work from any place that works best for you.

Why Payara Chooses Remote-First

At Payara, we believe that remote work shouldn’t be confined to your home. Our remote-first culture supports our Payarans in choosing where they work best. This flexibility promotes a better work-life balance, fosters creativity and has also been leading to greater productivity.

For example, for our Senior Test Engineer, Simon Laden, working from home means that he can have lunch with his daughter every day. For Petr Aubrecht, Senior Software Engineer, it means that in summer he can share an ice cream with his kids when he doesn’t have any meetings.

In Conclusion

While working from home is one form of remote work, true remote work offers a broader, more flexible approach to where and how you can be productive. At Payara, we embrace this flexibility, encouraging our Payarans to find the best environments to address their needs. Remote work isn’t just about being away from the office – it’s about being able to choose where you work best.

So, whether you’re a homebody who thrives in a home office setup, an adventurer who loves working from various spots around the world, a carer or anybody that simply wants this level of flexibility, remember that remote work is about finding what works best for you. At Payara, we’re here to support that journey every step of the way.Flexible, remote work at Payara
